Family Session - Brisbane Northside Family Photographer

You know you are in for a beautiful session when there are 3 year old twin sisters and their 18 month old sisters coming!

I do love all things girly, so when these girls turned up with flower head pieces and pretty dresses I was so excited. The girls were a little shy at first - its very common for little ones to take some time to warm up to a stranger - and it was only towards the end of our session that they finally found their voices and started singing and dancing together.

Little Esme was hilarious. She wasnt too sure about me at all - giving me a lot of funny faces that read something along the lines of "who IS this woman and why is she staring at me?" but once we started playing some tickle games with her Mum she had the most gorgeous smiles sneaking out.

Being that little bit younger, she loved doing her own thing, but once my special little stool came out she was stuck to it like glue. Kids love this little stool, its the best trick I have for getting them to stay put, and Esme was no different.

We captured some amazingly cute sibling photos and then Esme had some more cuddles with dad, being stretched into the air then coming down for snuggles and kisses. She squealed and giggled, its the best sound hearing a little girl having so much fun with her Dad!

It was a busy day at the Enoggera Reserve so we had to clear the path a few times for cyclists and bush walkers, and there was not one, but TWO weddings on at the location that day!

After the sun had dropped  a little more we headed off to look for some more pathway with a view over the dam. Lily and Gracie did some butterfly dancing for me and they loved it so much this was the point that all the giggles and smiles and words came out of them. They kept asking to do more of the butterfly dancing which of course we said they could.

As the session wound down I realised I had nearly forgotten to take the one photo that we always forget to take - just the parents. I know myself how rare it is to have a nice photo with my husband (we aren't the selfie types) so I try to make a point of taking one at each of my family sessions because as much as we adore the photos of our children, it is so important to remember ourselves and our relationship with our significant other as well.

So with the day all wrapped up we headed back to the car, which is a trick - of course I had to stop for one last photo on the sunlit path on the way!

Evelyn 8 Days - Brisbane Baby Photographer

When little Evenly arrived I instantly fell in love with all of her gorgeous hair! Her mum said she had a little bit of a mullet but that it was dissapperaring ad the days went on.

They had just had a very awake day the day before our shoot when Evelyn was awake and looking around for most of the day, but luckily we scored a sleepy day for her photos so we were able to capture loads of different photos for her. Oh, she woke though, and had the sweetest little look around during one of our setups. Her faces were so expressive I was cooing at my screen as I was editing!

She was not happy about the bonnet though. Im not sure why, because it looked so, SO cute! But instead of a cute smiling photo we captured possibly the Grumpiest Baby in a Bonnet photo you will ever see. #getthisthingoffme

Evelyn's parents had brought a teddy bear that her nanna had given her to include in the session.  Now, its not a big teddy, its about average size. But seriously. It looked massive next to her! Shes such a sweet little poppet that a her teddy bear dwarfed her in this setup!

Then the hiccups came on, so after another feed and set-change we were finally onto sleeping photos.  These had been a particular request for the session so I was so glad that she did drop off asleep for us to allow them. The sleeping on a blanket photos do require baby to be fast asleep as they are often posed into positions that could easily become unsafe if they were to startle or stretch, so to in keeping safety paramount at my sessions, I only ever photograph these photos when the little ones are sound asleep, and then still with a parent hovering a hand just out of shot.

Then just like that we were done and it was time to say good bye. I only hope that Evelyn doesn't hold the bonnet incident against me and returns for a session when she is older! A bonnet-free experience I promise!

Baby Ruby - Brisbane Newborn Photographer

As they walked in the door I couldn't contain my excitement at all of Ruby's beautiful hair! Her mum said they had trouble putting headbands on because the hair sits funny (a very common problem!) but I have photographer head pieces that sit perfectly on little foreheads, bald or full-haired it makes no difference. So of course head pieces were the order of the day!

Family photos are usually up first a newborn session so that mum and dad can get them out of the way and start to relax once the focus is off them. These two were so cute, taking my directions as be the could until I started calling out "look here, look there, smile at her, maybe a kiss?" as my excitement about the beautiful photos of this gorgeous family was hitting its crescendo, they weren't sure who should kiss who and ended up in the most delightful smile/kiss/cuddle you ever saw.

While we were changing setups she was snuggling into her dads arms and every few minutes, out of nowhere came the sweetest little squeak! Oh that little squeak nearly made me clucky, let me tell you!  As you can imagine, a newborn photographer that gets clucky can be a very dangerous situation. Sessions would be crazy drawn out if we spent our time professionally cuddling the little ones we should be photographing. But seriously... adorable.

Ruby was a star, sleeping almost the whole time she was here. We flew through set-up after set-up and it wasn't long before we were done with them all. A quick check of the clock revealed that we were done in record time, so I offered to do an extra setup before they headed off and so we did one of the most popular setups of 2016, the "Chalice Hands". Oh Ruby you were such a delight, I certainly hope to see you again for another round of photos when you're older!

Sitter Session - Brisbane Baby Photographer

Eep! I just photographed this little guys first birthday session and realised I hadn't yet shared his adorable sitter session - so here it is!

The first person I saw when I opened the door to welcome this family back for their sitter session was big sister Novelle - and I couldn't believe how much she had grown since her little brother was born! She still had the shy, cheeky smiles and darted straight for the toy box again, but she was so much taller and her hair has grown too.

Then I got the biggest shock when I saw how much Hunter had changed! Not just is he a big solid boy now, but his hair has changed from dark brown to a very pale blonde just like his mum.

It was a lovely morning with these three, we got some adorable family photos with each of the kids and mum then it was on to sibling photos. This didnt go quite so well.

Baby sessions can be tricky because we are working in between nap times to ensure they are the happiest we can get. Sometimes nap time can creep up on us and before we know it the smile bank is running low and the session starts to slow down while little ones have extra cuddles and snacks.

We always get some great shots, even though Hunter was not his usual smile-loaded self we still coaxed some out here and there and I was on high alert that I didnt miss them when they came! I am also a fan of some of the more inquisitive looks as well as a great big smile, those looks can tell such a story!

He lit up so much when his favourite teddy bear came out, he cuddled and rolled it around in his hands and feet until he found the little tag, then he rubbed the silky tag between his fingers and you could see him relax right away. Tags, always the best part of stuffed toys.

Hunters newborn session was a lot of neutral tones and browns so we used those same colours again for his sitter session. I like to tie in themes or setups from a newborn session into sitter sessions and first year sessions to help show how much the little people grow in that time.

I got so many snuggles in with Hunter at this session. I got some while his mum filled in paperwork, I got some while his sister was getting changed and I got even more at then end when we were packing everything back down to the car. I do love a sneaky snuggle with my little visitors, its probably one of my favourite parts of the shoot!

Introducing the Studio Space - Brisbane Baby Photographer

 The Studio

----------------------------------------

If you have had a session at Family Photography by Natarsha March in the past, then this might look very familiar:

Well, things have changed for 2017.

A lot.

If I had a dollar for every time I said the phrase "When I get my studio..." I would have had one a looong time ago! I loved my old space as you love the taste of a sausage in bread, its familiar, it works, it does the basic job it needs to do but if you had the choice you could think of many things you could improve.

After 5 years of photographing babies in my home, the time came for a dedicated studio space. I'm not sure who was more excited about this, me or my daughter Sophie who has shared her bedroom with my props her whole life.

By day a studio, by night her bedroom.

The number of times her room was loaded up with boxes of props because we had no where to store them or because I had back-to-back bookings, the cupboard doors always blocked by my wooden backdrops and her lego always being put away so they didn't get broken during a session. Gee she put up with a lot, but always with a smile. Love her so much.

The other family member who is excited about my new space is our dog Baxter. He used to be locked in the garage during my sessions but now he gets free roam in the top half of the house with all the indoor luxuries.

So the day finally came, we found a new home with a suitable studio space.

On moving day, it looked like this:

Yikes.

Props everywhere! Yellow cupboards! Green curtains! Yellow pendant light!

Yeah. Its been a long couple of weeks.

Firstly, it all got put into the existing framework so that we could get some feeling for it

Plus that week I hosted my first ever session in the new space. Oh holy cuteness, I think it is safe to say that this new space is going to work out.  Oh and I now have a new love affair with backlit photos!

So the next step was painting. You can't quite tell from the wide image above (or maybe you can) but the room was blue. And blue wont do. So white walls, white cupboards and a nice neutral wall to photograph larger family groups against. Of course test pots and test shots were in order to make sure we got the right colour for the wall.

With help from my ever obliging daughter Charlotte I settled on the top shade for its warmth and versatility.

She is so good about doing test photos for me - during another backlight test shoot I took a phone call and when I came back around 10 minutes later she was still sitting in her spot waiting to finish her "shoot"!

I have to take a moment to thank my amazing husband Travis for all his work to help bring this this dream to life. His support of the business and his incredible knowledge of DIY made the studio a reality. I would love to say that it was all my doing but the truth is that he was the one to prep and paint every inch of the room, ceiling, walls and trims. He hung the curtain rails and helped design the storage space for all the props. He takes so much pride in his work, which he absolutely should, because its perfect.
