Poo. It happens.

Awww. What a precious little bundle of delight.
OOOORRRRR.....
An unforgiving, forthright, ruthless poo machine.
Fact: Poo Happens.
A.
Lot.
Especially at a newborn session. There are 2 factors that play into this. We like babies to be well fed because as we all know, a full tummy makes us sleepy. Just check the couches after Christmas lunch if you ever need proof of this!
So we have a little baby with a little tummy that is loaded up with delicious milk. Some goes in... some will (sooner or later) come out. And heres where it gets tricky - newborn photography sessions are about sweet little NAKED babies!  We set ourselves up for the fall here. I know, it doesnt really make sense... until this:

See? Its worth it. So heads up, there is about a 95% chance that you and I will get bombed in one way or another at a newborn session, but hey, it happens! Indeed it's expected. And the lasting fact is that we dont even care because this:

Miss 3 Months

Sometimes things don't go to plan...  Miss 3 months was not in any mood to be cuddled by her big sister on this day! Every time we tried to put them together Miss 3 months would burst into tears - and her adorable 3 year old sister would follow in empathy! The first time it happened I had nearly had tears myself it was so sweet!  We got there in the end, 2 beautiful girls both smiling in the same photo, but I thought I would share one of the out-takes from when things weren't going so well!

Behind the Scenes - Newborn setup

So lets start with another beautiful baby (because thats what we all want to see right?)

Awww, love!!!

But what does this look like from a different angle?  I thought it might be interesting to pull back the curtain a little and show you what to expect to see at your session versus the photos I take at your session.

I am still a small business and yet to have my own proper studio space (one day.... ) so in the meantime I set up temporary sets in my home to create beautiful images for your family. I prefer to photograph in my own home as I know where the best light is throughout the day and can have everything set up and ready to go when you arrive. The other bonus is that you don't have to clean your house for me to come!

This is my current winter set-up for newborns. It is in my daughters bedroom so that I can heat the room up to around 30 degrees to keep baby nice and cosy and sleepy. So, exactly what does that first photo look like from a different perspective?

Quite different huh!

If you look closely at the picture you will see the heater just behind the backdrop stand. I use a special newborn posing beanbag that is both supportive and mouldable, a waterproof layer under the first blanket (just in case!), wraps and bonnets and headpieces on hand, blanket options, wipes, white-noise machine, and of course seats for mum and dad.

So while it is an in-home setup, I have spent a lot of time perfecting it to provide you with the most comfortable experience and gorgeous photos. Oh ok, since you asked, heres another one:

Another Session Share!

I first met this little munchkin when he came in for his newborn session, so I was very excited to see him and his mum again for his 9 month old photos! Its so cool to see how the little people I meet grow up, and Mr C certainly has a lot of cheeky in him.

Happy 2nd Birthday!

Miss 2 celebrated her second birthday with a photo session at the park with her mum. We had so much fun playing in the winter sun! I am in LOVE with her gorgeous pout - I promise I did not add any colour to it, that is all natural!

Baby Blue

I had the pleasure of photographing another baby boy in the past few days! This family were lucky enough to be given a nappy cake from a great local business I gift vouchers to. Lynne's cakes are amazing and great gifts for new or soon-to-be parents. You can find her on facebook here and you should definitely give her page a like while you're there!

Before and After

A lot of the work I do happens before and after a photography session. Before, I am preparing by checking weather forecasts, lighting conditions, considering appropriate props for your family and many other busy busy things.

After your session is just as busy. I spend a LOT of time at the computer perfecting your images in photoshop to make your beautiful pictures really shine. Here is an example of a newborn edit:

Each image takes me around 8 - 20 minutes to hand-edit. Im constantly checking skin-tone, lighting, that colours match through similar images, that focus is perfect and of course if there is anything distracting from your beautiful portrait.

It is my photoshop policy to leave what is natural (freckles, wrinkles and birthmarks) and remove what is temporary - bruises, scratches spots etc.  I think its important that you still look like you in your photos.
