Hamish Sitter Session - Brisbane Baby Photographer

Its not often I have a little visitor that comes with a massive crew, but Hamish certainly did!

With his parents, grandparents and 7 aunties and uncles in tow to fuss over him it was a full house to start this session off!

This family hadnt had a big family photo taken since the adult siblings were babies, so I think they probably look a little different to the family photo currently hanging on the wall.

With the big family photo clicked off, we moved on to smaller groupings, but the ones I loved the  most were the aunties and uncles all fussing over gorgeous little Hamish! I think the boys were maybe even luckier than the girls with him - and Hamish fit right in with them too. He was so happy hanging out with his uncles, but when the aunties took him over he was not so impressed! We had to work extra hard to get the smiles for their photo!

After the family photos were done we moved inside to the studio for the rest of Hamish's sitter session on his own.

This is one of the great new advantages of my new studio - we have a lovely property to photograph on outdoors as well as the studio, so you can capture both looks in one session without having to travel anywhere.

Hamish's mum had brought the cutest little outfits for him to wear at this session, blue denim overalls, bright coloured overalls and of course we always photograph babies with bare skin, because its just so soft and creamy and I could stare at pure baby photos all day long.

He was only just sitting un-aided for a few moments at a time, but I was so happy to be able to capture this milestone, with Dad sitting just to the side and ready to steady little Hamish any time he wobbled to the side. I love how you can see his cute little toes in these sitting photos too!

Now you also need to take a moment to appreciate this little mans blue eyes.

I mean, come on.  How stunning can one little man be?

As Hamish had been here for a newborn session we did a growth photo of him with the same teddy bear he brought to his newborn session. It took a little work to get a smile out of him but it was worth it in the end because that smile was amazing!

With the session coming to an end we put on his brightly coloured going home outfit. The cutest thing was how he would lay on his tummy, waving his arms around and talking to us, then take a break by crossing his hands in front of him and getting this face that almost said "You happy yet?" it was adorable.

And the short answer was yes. I am very happy to have had the pleasure of documenting this little mans first year milestones - I can't wait to see him back for his first birthday session!

Meyer Family - Brisbane Family Photographer

It was a beautiful winter afternoon riverside, the ducks were paddling their last laps of the day, the turtles popping their heads out of the water checking who was still in the park.

The winter sun was dropping low in the sky creating that beautiful golden glow that we photographers love so much.

The family jumped out of the car saying their hellos, little Heather hiding behind her mums legs at first and a very curios Sebastian checking me over, possibly trying to work out if I was going to be friendly or bossy.  (That depends who you ask by the way. My own children would likely say bossy but most kids think Im friendly!)

After looking through the print products at the cars and getting paperwork all out of the way, we headed off to my first favourite photo spot under some beautiful tall trees on the path just near the carpark.

However, today there were some people looking through the bushes, searching for something.

I presumed they were local rangers or scientists documenting something. Turned out they were Brazilian tourists looking for worms to use as fish bait in the river. Ok then...

They found a few unfortunate worms and got out of our way and we had the first gorgeous family photos clicked off very quickly.

The light was so gorgeous sparkling off of the river beside us that I spun the family around and did some bright sparkly photos with the glittery water behind them in the same spot.

We headed for the boardwalk and passed the tourists who had not caught anything with their worms.  The children seemed surprised by this, the rest of us not so much.

The pathway is a little rocky and Sebastian wanted to run but we had to hold him back because both mine and Claire's mothers instinct were screaming "they will FALL and get HURT and CRY" none of which is good news at a family photoshoot. So Sebastian was carried by his Dad and Heather happily walked at a responsible pace to the next photo spot.

The boardwalk was a safer place for Sebastian to run, so we let him run! A two year old has to burn off some energy somewhere right?

So Sebastian ran, and Heather sat sweetly for some photos on her own. Sebastian came to look at some yellow leaves she was holding which was such a sweet moment between them.

We tried a family photo here but Sebastian just ran towards me, the cheekiest smile on his face!

For our final spot we headed to the waters edge. Its always a risk with active young kids to be so close to the water which is why we leave these photos to the end.

They threw some stones into the water, looked for turtles and ducks, ran around in circles on the river sand and stopped for the briefest of moments to sit on a little rock at the rivers edge.

And with the sun dropped right down behind the hills and the childrens' cheeks flushed from all the fun it was time to end the session and wave this lovely family off to a nice dinner out together!

Ara Sitter Session - Brisbane Baby Photographer

The time always flies by when I have babies returning for milestone sessions - and I should know better but I am always stunned when the calendar clicks over and the newborns it seems I only just photographed area suddenly coming back for their sitter sessions!

I knew I would love this session with Ara, she was an adorable newborn and without doubt, she is an angelic little baby girl!

She was a little cool at the start of the day, not sure about smiling. It didnt matter to me one bit because as she was sat of the soft fluffy mat, a beautiful pink dress and matching flower in her hair, she was the most gorgeous little girl to photograph, smiling or not.

In case she was getting a little hungry, we gave her some biscuits to eat, and she gnawed away on them with the most intent look on her face, her parents giggled at how she was using her whole fist to keep her biscuit in her mouth, and they made for very cute photos!

We changed scene and tried to take some photos of her laying on her tummy, but Ara was having none of it.

As fast as her dad could lay her down she was back up on all fours trying to climb off the bean bag. Such a wiggler, she was so active!

We gave her a little teddy bear to see if that would slow her down, and sure enough she stopped for a few moments to inspect the bear, so thoughtful and focused on it.

Her mum had brought a few outfit changes and when I saw the red dress I knew right away we should do some brightly coloured photos with the bright light backdrop, and they came up great! Her dad played "Peek-a-boo" with one of my wraps and we were able to squeeze a couple of smiles out of her with that.

Next they indulged my creative side and let me do a brightly coloured flowery setup with a new yellow bonnet I have. Ara was not sure about it. She may have wondered why her parents would let this lady put big yellow flowers on her head, but she went with it for me as well. Kind of.

We changed her into a beautiful blue and yellow dress and ditched the headpiece and she was much happier, chewing on the flower stems and using them like drumsticks to tap the ground.

With the session winding up her Mum asked if we could do some photos in the garden, which is a great new option I have with the new studio. So we picked up a few things and stepped outside to find it had started drizzling.  We waiting five minutes, checked the radar and unfortunately it wasn't looking to improve, so we called it a day and agreed that for her first birthday we would definitely be doing some outdoor ones!

Before and Afters - Brisbane Family Photographer

I came across this awesome action set from Sleeklens this week and have had so much fun playing around with some different edit styles.  (if you're already keen you can find them here)

Firstly I thought this family photo in the park would look amazing with a moody edit and I loved how the "From a Candy Store - Paint Effect" came up on it.  The Light Glow is really cool too to enhance that beautiful golden hour sunlight glow in the sky.

The next one I wanted to try was a pastel edit, so I did this sweet photo of Aara dancing with a ribbon, straight away the "Base - from scratch" was awesome to bring the colour in more.   I loved playing with "Enhance tones" actions too, painting them on and off certain areas to help customise each edit.

I pulled a maternity edit up next, soft green tones from this beautiful park setting. I played with the portrait retouch actions and some more enhance tones (hot kiss, summer love and velvet ink) and again I loved how the light glow brought out the golden tones in the sun streaked leaves.

The last one I decided to go all in! A gorgeous portrait of my niece that I tested just about every action on, some stayed and some didnt look right. If they did stay I still found I preferred to brush them on to parts of the photo instead of a sweeping edit across the whole image.

It was so much fun playing with these new colour styles. They are really easy to use and can help give a new look to your edits.

Baby Zane - Brisbane Newborn Photographer

Ok. I have a confession.

I see a lot of babies.

Ok so thats not really much of a confession. But when you see a lot of babies, you get used to how cute and squishy they are, then out of no where, every so often (or ever second week, depending on how your hormones are travelling) you swoon over one of your little models.

Well, hold on to your ovaries, because this little man Zane is ahh-DOR-able.

Those cheeks alone will have your heart racing.

His perfect pout <3

Those lashes - 8 days old I tell you!

Even his teeny tiny toes were adorable. See?

Ok, let me introduce you to the rest of the family. He has a big brother Oliver, who I also photographed as a tiny baby, not that you would recognise him now because he is cracking the charts at two years old and bigger than his big sister Peyton!

Peyton is the eldest and also outrageously cute, beautiful brown eyes and the sweetest smile you ever saw.  She was tiny when I first met her too, just under 6 lbs, well she's obviously grown a lot in the past 3 years too, but not quite as much as Oliver.

Ok, back to Zane.

So its lucky he's so sweet to look at, because he was not too impressed with me. He kept an eye on me the whole time he was here. Im not kidding. This one did not sleep. He faked sleeping here and there for a maxim of maybe 4 minutes at a time, but thats all we need to create these totally gorgeous photos for his family.

They brought along a special receiving blanket to photograph with Zane, one that his mum had been brought home from the hospital in when she was born.

I have incorporated this beautiful blanket into each of the childrens' newborn session, each time trying something a little different with it. Its just so amazing to be able to create something so sentimental for families, a true generational heirloom artwork spanning across time, something these children will be able to look back on as adults and perhaps photograph their own children with this heirloom blanket.

Well, with the important photos done we send the older siblings off for a drive with Dad and wrapped up the rest of the session with in peace and quiet.

I was indulged a little when Mum let me do a brightly coloured setup for fun, but most of this session was soft neutral shades and to be honest, Zane looked so sweet in them.

The last shot of the day was in a cute "going home" outfit that his Nonna had bought especially. Another tradition that has followed our sessions with the older siblings.

Its always such a fun day having these guys in studio, and while I get the impression this was the last newborn shoot for them, I can't wait to have them back in a few months for Zane's sitter session!

Poppy - Brisbane Newborn Photographer

Baby Poppy arrived with her two big brothers and very proud parents. The boys rushed right in to play with the toys in the play area while we went through the formalities before starting the photographing, and Poppy slept peacefully.

I usually pose with Mum first and had Poppy all snuggled in to her Mums arms. She was so content she even smiled! I showed her Mum the back of the camera and her eyes welled up and she said "Oh dont show me, Ill cry!".

And why wouldn't you? Your beautiful baby girl will only fit into your arms like this for just a few weeks before she grows too big to hold this way. This is why I love this hold so much, its such a beautiful image of mother and baby, their connection, their love, their bond.

Next we brought the boys in for a family photo, and Harper and Archie were so excited to have a turn in front of the camera. Archie got to stand on a little stool while Harper got to cuddle in with Dad.

The boy each had a turn by themselves for photos too. The boys didn't remember, but they had been to see me once before when little Harper was born. Archie was a great big brother then and is still an awesome big brother now. Sensible but fun, amazing blue eyes that sparkle with a little mischief and a lot of heart.

Harper is full of fun, cheeky smiles, cheeky giggles and lots of energy. The last time I saw him he was just days old and a tiny little 2.5kg. Well he certainly grew big and strong like his brother! The boys both calmed down and listened very carefully to their parents while we took their sibling photo, I think the both really love cuddling their new baby sister.

With the boys photos all finished they headed off for some morning tea while we finished Poppy's photos.

Firstly we photographed Poppy on a gorgeous lavender set. She was so sleepy and settled that I didnt have to wrap her at all for her shoot. The lavender colour was so perfect for her colouring too.

Next we did a yellow floral set and then a pink setup with a feather. I had this idea for a long time to create a nautilus shell shaped image and I love how this came up.

Poppy wasn't too sure about the beanbag photos at first, as it was the first time she had been on her belly since arriving. We managed to capture a couple of quick photos of her on her side before she decided that she wasn't happy. She had a little wriggle and started to suck on her fingers so we stopped everything to give her a little feed before winding down the session and waving our goodbyes.

Chapman Family - Brisbane Family Photographer

It was a beautiful autumn afternoon as we met in the idyllic riverside spot of Bunya Crossing Reserve.

Jonathan and Matthew were happily turtle spotting with their parents as I pulled into the carpark, one of the wonderful things about this stunning location.

Matthew quickly informed me that he knew what he was doing today because he had done this once before, which had me bonding to him already. I love the confidence kids have!

Little Jonathan was a great little model as well, listening and turning on his "good" smile on cue. These boys were so well behaved and so sweet with each other, it was such a joy to be around this family.

One of the first things that struck me upon meeting these boys was their eyes. Such bright, vibrant blue eyes and lashes every girl in the world would be jealous of. #jackpot

This session was all about the boys, but because I like to document the full family unit, I talked Mum and Dad into getting into a couple of photos as well, so we kicked the session off with a family photo.

Next the boys had turns by themselves, then together, and gosh they were so easy to work with. I tried a few jokes to get the boys smiling but was quickly put to shame. Matthew had a seemingly infinite list of really great kids jokes:

"Why did the chicken cross the park?
To get to the other slide!"

We headed to the river side and had some fun throwing rocks into the river.  Matthew was very proud to have thrown the farthest wile Jonathan was just sad when they ran out of rocks.

Next was the board walk and the boys had a lot of fun running and jumping along here.  With the action shots clicked off we headed back to the riverside. The light was so perfect with the sun setting behind the trees and the sky and valley all lighting up with a soft diffused light.

As it was such a beautiful spot, we did another round of family photos and I even talked Mum and Dad into a photo with each of the boys as well. I think it is so important to capture these relationships at every opportunity. I know as adults a lot of us dont like being in front of the camera, but it is so important for our children, not just today but in future, to have photos to look back on of them with their mum and dad and see how important that family bond is.

Dad started to show the boys how to skip stones across the river, and you should have heard them! Jonathan actually squealed "Dad!!! You got three bounces!!" while Matthew wanted to know the secret and was trying to skip them himself.

With all the photos clicked off and the light dropping by the minute we called it a day, and I rushed home to see what stunning images of these truly wonderful boys I had captured.
