Child-friendly Cafe's in North Brisbane

I love coffee, which means that after I had my first baby it became a lifeline to the real world. I loved a cafe where I could sit and relax while my baby slept or chewed on a toast crust while I got that great caffeine hit. However I quickly found out that not all cafe's are pram and kid friendly, so I decided to share with you some of my favourite cafes on the North-side of Brisbane to go with kids.

======================================

BIRDS & BEES CAFE

5/1-5 Queens Rd, Everton Hills
https://www.facebook.com/birdsandbeescafe?_rdr

This great new cafe just opened. There is a fenced play area for children and babies with toys, tables and chalkboard. It is open and spacious for prams. Food and coffee awesome! A great sun trap on a cool morning with lovely views over the Bunya hills.

COFFEE UNDERCOVER

1125 Waterworks Rd, The Gap
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Coffee-Undercover/589694204377768

This is a little coffee shop run by The Gap Baptist Church. They don't sell food so bring your own snacks, good coffee and loads of toys for the kids inside, a nice play fort and sand pit outside. Great for all ages.  They are closed Mondays.

======================================

EVERTON PARK HOTEL

101 Flockton St, Everton Park

http://evertonparkhotel.com.au

Better for active kids, toddlers can get a bit overwhelmed by older children in the playground. Best on school days when its more quiet. Free activities run during school holidays but that makes it really busy those weeks. The carousel runs evenings and weekends and is $2 a ride, its also free at times during school holidays. There are also colouring sheets and pencils to keep kids entertained while waiting for food at the table.

======================================

HOME STORE CAFE
20 Stewart Rd, Ashgrove
http://www.homestorecafe.com.au

See that little yellow door? It leads to a play room just for kids! The food and coffee here is so good and the staff are awesome too.

======================================

MT COOT-THA GARDENS
Sir Samuel Griffith Drive
http://www.botanical.co

Pram friendly, great spot to get a coffee and catchup with your mums group before taking a stroll through the gardens. The walking paths are great for prams, toddlers have fun looking for the things on the kids trail and running wild on the grassy lawns. Take bug spray if you are planning a stroll.

======================================

Open Book Cafe

2a/77 Camelia Ave, Everton Hills
https://www.facebook.com/openbookcafe?fref=ts

Inside or out, this place is cool. Pizzas are awesome, coffee is too. Free pacman game that my kids love pushing the buttons on, plastic cups for kids, dog parking at the front. Toys and books for toddlers and lots of bright colours to look at.

======================================

COFFEE ON THE WAY
120 Ferny Way, Ferny Hills https://www.facebook.com/pages/Coffee-on-the-Way/116770555001361

At the back of the shop there is are couches and a coffee table with kids toys to play with. Better for babies toddlers than active children.

======================================

COFFEE CLUBS
The Gap -  30/1000 Waterworks Rd, The Gap QLD 4061
Everton Park -  Shop 1, North West Plaza, Flockton Street, Everton Park

Both pram friendly, The Gap Coffee Club has a padded play area suitable for younger toddlers and babies while the Everton Park one has a McDonalds style play fort more suitable for older kids. They sometimes have pencils and workbooks they hand out to children while you wait for lunch.

This is by no means a definitive list, so if you know of a great spot to take the kids please share it in comments!

Not-so-smashing

This is going to sound hard to believe, but sometimes the cake doesn't get smashed.  Some little people must either think it looks too good to destroy or they dont want to get messy.  Which is what happened at this session. However, as you can see, a smash session always comes up great even if its not all messy. And hey, we finished the shoot with messy watermelon!

CAKE SMASH
Includes 1 hour session, cake, 15 images on USB, storyboard collage, A3 poster print of collage, online gallery and a mobile app
$260

Smashiest Smasher!

I will be honest here, after the experience of the Cake Smash Of Doom (read about it here) I got a bit anxious before this cake smash session. However, I needn't have been as Little Smasher Hazel had the TIME OF HER LIFE!

Oh my, the mess she made. And it was glorious.  Check it out!

Ps. Her mum confirmed that the dress did come white again!

What Is An "Oldborn"?

You often hear newborn photographers talk about the two week window for your session. This is because babies are more likely to be sleepy and less likely to stir once asleep, which is what makes our job possible. Also, in the first few weeks babies are more curly from being in the womb so they will go into the newborn pose workflow, which also is not as likely for "Oldborns".

Oldborns are babies between the ages of 2 weeks and 2 months.

After a couple of weeks earthside their bodies start to stretch, their interest in the world starts to open up and photography sessions are not guaranteed to capture the same curly/sleepy poses that are more likely in the first two weeks.

Personally, I found it hard to leave the house after I had my first baby, everything was a little overwhelming. This is why I do not have a set time frame to book your session. I will photograph your family whenever is suitable for you, so long as I have a session available!

Here is a beautiful 5 week new baby boy who did have a big sleep at his session and we were able to capture these gorgeous photos for his mum and dad.

Please remember that sleepy photos are possible but not guaranteed when babies are this age.

Cute Cousins Pt 2

Here is the beautiful cousin to yesterdays post, born just 2 weeks apart they are destined BFFs for sure.

This little poppet had such a strong character at just 10 days new, she was determined not to sleep, and even though she was relaxed at the session, I would position her and then she would wait for me to pick up my camera before having a big stretch out of position. It didn't really matter that she was awake as she had some of the most divine little smiles, check out the one she gave her dad!

Cute Cousins Part 1

Would you look at these lashes? And that pout? And those cheeks? I can barely cope with so much newborn goodness squished into one ve-heery cute little man!

Now here is a really cool thing about this little poppet, he has a cousin born just 2 weeks after him, and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to photograph both of their newborn sessions. I will share her session soon - I have no doubt that this little fella and his new cousin will be best friends for life.
