My New Baby

During a coffee date with a close friend last week my phone rang.
I said "Do you mind if I answer, it's The Engineer and I'm hoping he has some good news for me." She didn't mind, so I picked up.
"Yes.... "
...........
..................
..........................
"OMG are you serious! Yayayayayayay! I love you honey!!"
"You're pregnant!" My friend gasps!
"Well I do have a new baby coming home tonight, but no, I'm not pregnant."
My husband had just confirmed that he had collected my brand new camera body from the store.

I have been giving this camera the glad-eye for a long time now, doing all my research to ensure that I bought just the right camera for my business, and the day had finally come! I was so excited that I literally read the manual front to back. Then I celebrated like this:

It is beautiful. (Agreed, Moet is beautiful but I meant the camera)
I love it so much. (Again, the sentiment fits for both but was intended for the camera)

My old camera has a very special place in my heart. It captured my first ever photos of my babies and was the catalyst for this business to come about. I also know that a good camera does not necessarily make the photo special, a good photographer will be able to capture a beautiful image with any DSLR because the knowledge behind taking a photo is what matters. That said, there are some technical aspects you get in top end cameras that improve workflow plus images can be printed super-large sizes at better quality.

My girls love to be in front of the camera, and of course I love photographing them, but this was turned around last weekend - The Engineer thought it was cute to let Miss 2yo play "Photographer" with my 1 day new camera.

She's actually got the concept down pretty well, most kids look at the LCD display these days so look out for my new assistant!  Anyway, once I reminded him how much that camera and lens cost the game was up pretty quick!

One year new

I absolutely LOVE when newborns return for their first birthday session! We had an amazing afternoon at the park with lots of laughs and smiles, but the honest enquiring look in this first photo is one of my favourites. Happy first birthday!!

Cake Smash!

Its been a while since I had the pleasure of photographing a cake smash. We had so much fun, little munchkins sister even helped get messy! Cake smash shoots are a great way to celebrate a first birthday, you can find all the details on my website

My Friend/Brother/Cousin has a DSLR

Three years ago when I had my first baby, I figured "I am a photographer. I know how to take pictures of my own baby."

And here is what I took:

Yes, correctly exposed, well focused, rule of thirds obeyed...  it's just not what you really expect from a professional newborn photo. It doesn't make you go awwww.

Because yes I knew how to take a photo, I even knew how to do a very basic edit on that photo, but I had no idea how to pose a new baby to look their best. So my photos look just like snapshots that my mum could take.

If I could go back in time, I would insist to myself to book a newborn session with a newborn specialist. Its such a special time in your life, and it is such a short time, your new baby and your family should be captured in the most beautiful way.

It was only after I took a course in newborn posing, a course in newborn editing, upgraded my photoshop tools and skills and bought proper posing equipment that my photography of newborns jumped into a different league.

I learnt how to pose newborns safely. I learnt tips for seeing those beautiful little faces best and I learnt what props and photography tools I needed to be able to do the job right. This is why a newborn photographer will always take photos that a family member or friend, no matter how talented, could take (unless they are a newborn photographer also, obviously).

This is why it is also important to book a specialist newborn photographer and not a wedding photographer, product photographer, landscape photographer or one of those pop-up supermarket/mall photographers for your newborn photos. I can't photograph those other specialist genres like they do, and in all honesty, its not where my passion lies. I absolutely love meeting and photographing new little people and so have invested in the necessary tools, time and education to do so.

Sugar and Spice

This little poppet was such a sweetheart to photograph! She has a very cheeky smile and she loved poking her tongue out to mum and dad. Her beautiful pink blanket was from home and after a long morning of modelling, it all became too much and she took an angelic snooze at the end of the session.
Her mum and dad were lucky to be gifted a voucher for their session at their baby shower. Photography vouchers are a great gift idea for new parents and you can choose to gift a dollar amount or a package deal. Contact me today for more information, all packages are at

7 days new Thea

It is always so exciting to photograph a newborn, but when you capture smiles as big as this, its a whole other level of joy! My heart races when I am working with babies and it all goes to plan.  Little Thea only slept a short time for us but it was long enough for the magic to happen.
